Our Lady, the Holy Mother of God, the Madonna, the Virgin Mary, the Blessed Virgin... These are all the names of the Earthly woman who gave birth to Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. The coin, titled Madonna, depicts Michelangelo's sculpture of Mary and Jesus. The marble statue is 128 cm high and was carved from a single piece of marble in 1504. Unlike many sculptors and painters who depict the Madonna gazing at her child, Michelangelo sculpted Mary gazing in sorrow as if seeing the future that Jesus would have to endure. This sculpture is the only work by Michelangelo that had left Italy during his lifetime to decorate a cathedral in Bruges.
