In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon is considered the primary sea god. Pictured as a man riding across the sea in a chariot, he holds a trident with which he is able to conjure storms and smash rocks. His symbols were also the bull, the dolphin and the horse. Poseidon was worshipped as a mighty and powerful god by all seafarers and merchants, who built altars and prayed to him that he would grant their ships a smooth voyage and ensure the success of their trade. Since fresh water makes the earth fertile, Poseidon was often associated with the creative power of nature and considered the patron of the family.
