Fraud during the quarantine period. How to save your money
02.04.2020
During the quarantine, the share of remote banking services is steadily increasing. This means that clients have heeded advice to restrict their use of cash, and only visit bank branches as a matter of urgency.
Pivdenny Bank is constantly operating to improve the security of all banking transactions and protect client funds. In order to ensure maximum reliability, we ask our clients to be vigilant when conducting banking transactions and to follow simple security rules.
The most common cases of fraud during the quarantine involve:
- A call from a “bank employee” informing you that your card has been or will be blocked. In order to “unblock” it, the caller will always ask for confidential details.
Please note: a real bank employee never asks for confidential card details because it is a violation of the law. - A call from someone who claims to be an employee of the Pension Fund (or another government agency) and announces that money (a pension payment, additional charges, financial aid, etc.) will be transferred to your card. Or vice versa, the card is blocked, and you need to transfer funds to a new one. In order to receive a payment or transfer, the caller will try to find out the confidential details of your card.
Please note: to charge any amount to your account, the sender of the funds only needs to know the card number. If you are being asked to disclose sensitive information, this is fraud! - A call from someone who claims to be a bank employee to “check” credit information. Under the pretext that the borrower does not have to pay fines for late repayment of loans, the caller asks for personal data.
Please note: the bank has all the information necessary to service your card, only those attempting to defraud money request confidential data. - Fraudulent websites to pay for utilities. Phishing services ask clients to complete a payment form, including information about their card number, expiration date, three-digit security code on the back of the card and SMS code from the bank. With this information, third parties are able to steal money from your account.
Please note: to make secure online payments, ensure that the website is not on the “Black list of fraudulent websites” compiled by the Ukrainian Interbank Payment Systems Member Association (EMA). It takes a few minutes to verify, but you will be certain that the online payment is secure.
Also, we would like to remind you of the general rules of card account security:
- Always keep your card details confidential.
- Never provide your card and account details by phone under any circumstances, including:
- the card expiration date;
- the three-digit security code on the back of the card (CVV2/CVC2 code);
- passwords sent by the bank in SMS messages;
- the card PIN code;
- passwords you receive in SMS messages;
- your password for MyBank Internet banking;
- personal identity data: your passport series and number, “secret word”, recent card transactions.
- Make payments online only on secure and trusted websites.
- Before using an ATM, carefully inspect it from the outside and do not use it if you find any suspicious devices on the keyboard or near the card reader.
- Activate the SMS notification function for all card account transactions.
If you lose your payment card or if you believe third parties have gained access to your personal card data – contact the Pivdenny Bank Client Support Centre IMMEDIATELY at 0 800 30 70 30 and block the payment card.
